The Ultimate Vegan Summer Skincare Routine

Have you ever noticed how our skin changes with the seasons?

In winter, the cold, harsh weather strips away our natural moisture, leaving our skin feeling dry, flaky and in desperate need of some TLC.

Summer, on the other hand, is a whole different ball game. Not only do we sweat more due to increased humidity (which can clog our pores with bacteria and make us more susceptible to breakouts!), we’re also exposed more to air conditioning, sun cream, chlorine, salt water, and harmful UV rays.

But, don’t panic! Your dreams of having supple, healthy, glowing skin this summer can still come true… you just have to make a conscious effort to stay protected. And reading this article is the perfect place to start doing just that!

So, what are you waiting for?

Check out our top tips for keeping your skin safe this summer and don’t forget to spread the word about Truth About Makeup. We’re on a mission to leave an earth-friendly footprint that benefits both our skin and the planet, and we always stand against animal testing

How to Protect Your Skin in Summer

1. Use daily SPF

This one is a no-brainer and actually applies all year round (yes, even if it’s cloudy)!

SPF is hands down the best way to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and using it daily can help to prevent the early onset of wrinkles and significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Opt for a standalone SPF, or choose an SPF-powered moisturiser, BB cream or foundation – the choice is yours! Just make sure to apply SPF every morning and remove it every night.

    2. Switch to lighter moisturisers

In winter, we need thick, rich comfort and deep moisturisation to combat the cold, dry weather. In summer, our skin needs to breathe because the increased humidity triggers our skin to produce more sebum – which can leave us feeling oily, to say the least!

Switching to a lighter moisturiser in the summer months reduces shine and prevents bacteria build up, but still provides us with a soft, natural glow.

If you’re on the lookout for a light, summer-friendly moisturiser, check out the Melia Rose SC Face Cream from Queenie Organics. Its gentle replenishing formula balances oil levels without leaving any residue. P.S. Safflower is a key ingredient – it’s naturally high in linoleic acid which has been found to effectively unclog pores!

      3. Cleanse and exfoliate

Step one – cleanse. Step two – exfoliate. Why? To remove dirt, sweat, makeup and bacteria and buff away dead skin cells to leave you feeling soft, fresh and ready for anything!

During summer, the extra heat can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts, so finding the perfect cleanser is a must. Husk and Seed’s Gently Nourishing Cleansing Balm is suitable for even the most sensitive of skin. It’s vegan, cruelty-free, palm-oil free and made with natural fruit butters to leave your skin feeling soft and refreshed, morning, noon and night!

Guess what pairs perfectly with our favourite gentle cleansing balm… Husk and Seed’s Gently Resurfacing Facial Exfoliant! Revive your natural glow the vegan way with apricot and hibiscus powder, and feel summer-ready in next to no time.

        4. Stay hydrated

The sun is shining and it’s hot, hot, hot so make sure to keep your skin hydrated in the summer months!

From drinking plenty of water and avoiding super hot showers and baths to finding the perfect lightweight vegan moisturiser to keep your skin feeling dewy, there’s lots of steps you can take to stop your skin from drying out this summer season.

And remember, even if you slather on high SPF sun cream, you’re never 100% protected from harmful UV rays. Make sure to always apply a suitable after sun lotion or moisturiser post exposure.

Choosing the Perfect Eco-friendly, Vegan Sun Cream

So, now you understand the basics of protecting your skin in summer, you’re probably wondering how to source the perfect sun cream. And by perfect, we mean natural, eco-friendly, vegan and 100% cruelty free!

Unfortunately, not all sun creams are vegan; they often contain ingredients like beeswax, collagen, lanolin and elastin. But all hope is not lost! The Vegan Society has put together a fabulous list of vegan sun care products so that you can stay protected in summer, without harming any of the earth’s creatures.

And remember, some of the ingredients in traditional sun creams have been found to be damaging to marine life. Make sure you choose a vegan sun cream that’s also free from synthetic ingredients and harmful chemicals like sulphates, phthalates and artificial fragrances if you’ll be swimming in the ocean!

          Natural Remedies for Sunburnt Skin

If the worst does happen and you end up with a nasty sunburn, you’ll be looking for relief – fast! Luckily, there are some natural, eco-friendly remedies in Mother Nature’s pantry that can cool, soothe and even help to repair your sun-damaged skin!

          Our favourites are:

Aloe vera: Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera can relieve the pain and itching caused by sunburn. Plus, it’s packed with amino acids that can stimulate collagen production, improve elasticity and reduce skin dryness. Make sure you choose a gel with an aloe vera content of 97.5% or higher – or even better, buy an aloe vera plant, remove a leaf, and squeeze the gel directly onto your skin!

Cucumber: Cucumbers are naturally rich in antioxidants and have analgesic properties that help to relieve the pain and discomfort of sunburn. Mash or blend the cucumbers to create a paste and apply it directly to your sunburnt skin. And don’t forget to chill the cucumbers first – coolness will speed up your recovery by constricting your capillaries!

If you don’t have any aloe vera or cucumbers to hand, you could also try oatmeal, witch hazel or even honey!
